Sedbergh School: visitor guide

Updated 17 October 2026

Sedbergh School combines Lancashire county cricket with the Howgill fells behind the ground. Make transport the first part of your plan: the railway journey needs an onward connection, and staying in town can make a full day’s cricket much easier to enjoy.

The ground

The school’s 2026 county-match announcement places Lancashire against Surrey in the One Day Cup on 21 July, with the Howgill fells as the backdrop. The setting is central to the appeal: a day watching professional cricket can become part of a small-town break, with the surrounding countryside and local shops adding something beyond the score.

Sedbergh is an active school, so use the entrances and spectator areas opened for the event. The school’s cricket programme describes county-standard wickets and its wider player development. A county fixture uses those facilities for a public event; it does not give spectators unrestricted access to school buildings or other playing fields.

Visit Sedbergh’s school walk introduces the campus, including the Cloisters, main school building and cricket field. Its instructions ask walkers to stay on footpaths and off the pitches. If you want to explore, choose a separate walk using that route and follow any event restrictions in place on the cricket day.

Our preference would be to arrive the evening before a county match. It gives you time to find the entrance, settle into your room and make a relaxed start. If that does not fit your plans, allow enough margin in the morning for the final road journey. Reaching Oxenholme on time is only part of reaching the first ball.

Stands and where to sit

There is no published seating plan in the current Sedbergh sources linked here. Lancashire’s 2024 match guide described loose seating around the ground and allowed folding chairs. The next event’s seating and chair arrangements are TBC. Ask before carrying a chair a long way by train, and check rather than assume that a historical setup will be repeated unchanged.

With unreserved outdoor seating, your first decision is the view. An end-on position makes the bowler’s line easier to follow, while a side-on view helps with footwork, the arc of a shot and running between the wickets. If movement is permitted, watch an over from more than one place before setting down your bag. Keep clear of sight-screen routes and areas marked for officials.

Consider comfort over a full innings rather than only the opening half hour. A light layer, hat and waterproof can make the same seat workable through changing conditions. Plan on open-air viewing unless the specific ticket promises shelter. If you need a shaded or covered place, speak to Lancashire about the available arrangements before choosing the match.

For a group, arrive together if you want to sit together. Leaving equipment across several empty seats can inconvenience other spectators, especially when a temporary event layout has limited space. Keep pathways wide enough for wheelchairs and buggies, and ask a steward where a chair can be placed without narrowing a route or blocking a seated spectator behind it.

Getting there

By taxi or drop-off

Oxenholme has taxis on the station forecourt; Garsdale and Dent have no taxi ranks. Book the Sedbergh transfer before travelling. Check whether your preferred taxi app serves the area.

Sources: Westmorland and Furness Council: taxi licensing

Visit Sedbergh’s rail guide identifies Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line as a gateway about ten miles from town. It also discusses Garsdale, Dent and Kirkby Stephen, but warns that these smaller stations have no taxi ranks. Choose the railway station by the complete connection rather than simply the shortest line on the map.

The town’s travel guide advises booking rural taxis well ahead because local availability is limited. Reserve both directions if a taxi is essential, giving the driver the event entrance and an agreed return meeting point. If several people share the transfer, establish how much luggage or folding-chair space is needed. A vehicle that seats the group may not also fit everyone’s bulky equipment.

Public buses depend on the day of the week. Consult Visit Sedbergh’s bus information and the operator timetable for your actual match date. The information includes links between Sedbergh, Kendal and Oxenholme, plus Western Dales services. check rather than assume an afternoon arrival bus has an evening return after play, or that a school-day timetable applies in the holidays.

Lancashire has previously arranged a match shuttle from Oxenholme, described in the 2024 guide. A 2027 shuttle is TBC. Book it only when the county publishes the service and its conditions; old departure times or fares cannot be used for a new journey. If your plans depend on a shuttle, wait for the announcement before buying a tightly timed return train.

For the 2026 Surrey match, the school association’s announcement directed matchday parking to Lupton Field and provided on-site spaces for Blue Badge holders. The next parking location, charge and reservation process are TBC. Follow the event signs when approaching the school, keep residential entrances clear and allow time for the walk between parking and the spectator gate.

Getting home

The 2024 One-Day Cup guide gives an 18:30 finish; check your current fixture before booking a return. Play can finish early or run late. Sedbergh has no station: arrange the transfer to Oxenholme for northbound or southbound West Coast Main Line trains. Garsdale and Dent are alternatives, but neither has a taxi rank; Oxenholme has taxis on the forecourt. Local buses are sparse, so arrange the return transfer before travelling. Oxenholme has taxis on the station forecourt; Garsdale and Dent have no taxi ranks. Book the Sedbergh transfer before travelling. Check your last train in the National Rail journey planner and allow time to leave the ground.

Tickets and festival days

Buy Lancashire county admission from the official county ticket shop. Confirm that the product names Sedbergh School, the correct teams and the date you want. A ticket for Old Trafford is a different event, even if the opponent is the same. Save the confirmation where it can be opened without a mobile signal.

The previous Lancashire match guide required members as well as non-members to reserve admission. For 2027, member booking rules, prices and any family package are TBC. Check whether your membership category includes the fixture and whether you must claim a ticket before arriving. A membership benefit and a completed reservation are not always the same thing.

For a family visit, agree a realistic length of stay and sort out everyone’s admission together. A whole one-day match may be longer than a young child wants to watch continuously. Choose an arrival time that allows a look around the public areas, bring suitable layers and ask about the next event’s family activities when the programme is published.

Your ticket on the day

The 2024 guide places the ticket office at Loftus Hill, open from 10:00 until the end of the innings break; check the hours for your match. Lancashire’s 2026 terms let the original purchaser arrange a duplicate up to 48 hours before an event, for collection on match day with photographic ID. Confirm ticket presentation and same-day phone problems with the ticket team before travelling.

Children and age rules

Lancashire’s 2026 terms allow proof-of-age checks for under-16 and over-65 concessions; junior categories can differ by match. Ask whether your child needs an adult, and confirm hospitality age limits and the ID accepted at bars. Taking the family

Buy tickets from the county’s official ticket office or the resale platform named by that seller. Use the official resale route and read Action Fraud’s ticket fraud advice.

What you can take in

The January 2026 Lancashire regulations cover Sedbergh as well as the main ground. Imported alcohol, unsealed drinks, glass or metal drinks containers and cans are prohibited. Bags are limited to one per person, no larger than 45 × 30 × 30cm. Food permission for the next Sedbergh match is TBC; ask about picnic and dietary needs before packing.

The dated 2024 Sedbergh guide allowed a folding chair and listed catering on site, but the next match’s concessions and chair rules must come from its own guide. Keep the bag compact for any train or shuttle connection. Clothing and sun protection should remain easy to reach throughout the day, without spreading your belongings over neighbouring seats.

Bring enough phone charge for admission and the return transfer, and keep a separate copy of your driver’s details if using a taxi. If carrying medical equipment or another necessary item that falls outside the standard bag rule, arrange it with the county in advance. That also lets you explain any seating or access requirement associated with it.

Paying at the ground

The 2024 guide says Sedbergh’s ticket office takes card payments only. Check the current payment arrangements at other outlets and cash-machine provision before travelling.

Where to stay

Staying in Sedbergh removes the need to fit the end of play into an onward rail connection. The town’s official accommodation directory includes bed and breakfasts, campsites and self-catering options. Our choice would depend on the wider trip: a room in town suits an evening meal on foot, while a rural cottage makes more sense if you already have transport.

Look carefully at the address before reserving something described as “near Sedbergh”. Check the distance from the actual property to the match entrance and whether your route requires a car or taxi. A remote stay can be attractive for a walking holiday but awkward for a cricket day without your own vehicle. Ask about luggage storage if you arrive before check-in.

For a short break, compare arriving the day before with staying after the match. The first option makes the morning calmer; the second protects your chance to watch the last overs. Flexible cancellation can be useful while the next county fixture is unannounced. Wait for the published venue and date before committing to a room specifically for cricket.

Evenings out

The Visit Sedbergh food directory lists the Dalesman Country Inn, the Black Bull and other places around Main Street. It describes the Dalesman as serving evening meals and the Black Bull as using a seasonal menu. Check service times and book directly if dinner after cricket is important to your group.

Sedbergh’s Book Town pages offer another way to spend spare time, with bookshops and book cafés. Browse before the match or on another day unless a business confirms evening opening. Our suggestion is to keep a little unscheduled time for this rather than trying to turn every spare hour into a booked activity.

For a walk, use the town’s published routes and choose one that fits your time, footwear and the weather. A full day outdoors at the cricket may leave less energy for the hills than expected. A short town circuit and a meal can be a better evening than setting off late on an ambitious route. Leave a longer countryside outing for a separate day.

Fixtures

Lancashire’s 2026 match centre and the school’s announcement confirm Surrey at Sedbergh on 21 July 2026. That fixture belongs to the previous season. County dates, start times and ticket availability for 2027 are TBC.

For another Lancashire outground experience, see Southport and Birkdale. Check each ground separately when the next season appears: an outground visit may be a single match, and a familiar month in a previous year is not a reliable travel date. Use the venue field in the county’s full fixture entry before confirming accommodation.
