Met Office forecast for Merchant Taylors

The ground

Merchant Taylors’ is a working school with a substantial cricket programme. Its cricket department describes the campus as a base for Middlesex youth cricket and first-team training. The county presence is therefore part of a wider sporting relationship. When Middlesex stages a public match, follow the event signs and stewards within the school grounds; your cricket ticket directs you to the match rather than giving general access to school buildings.

The setting offers an alternative to the permanent stands at Lord’s. Our view is that it is particularly appealing if you enjoy a lower-level boundary perspective and the chance to compare angles before settling down. The county’s other outground at Radlett is a useful companion trip, but the two have different railway approaches. Save the full ground name with your ticket so everybody in your party travels to the same place.

Two different formats were confirmed here in 2026: a June T20 double-header and September Championship cricket. That breadth matters when planning a visit. A double-header can give a group two matches to follow on one day, while a Championship visit lets you watch the rhythm of a longer contest. Choose the experience you want first, then check the timings, entry conditions and transport for that specific fixture.

Stands and where to sit

No published seating plan with spectator block numbers is available for this guide. Middlesex’s September 2026 Championship information described unreserved temporary folding seats, allowed people to bring a chair and provided sunshade pagodas. Those arrangements favour travelling light if a standard folding seat works for you. If you need the support of a particular chair, confirm that bringing it remains permitted for the match you book.

Our suggestion is to inspect both your view of the wicket and the route out of the seating area before unpacking. A place that looks ideal from standing height may be less useful once everybody is seated in front of you. If you want to follow the ball leaving the bowler’s hand, look for an authorised end-on view. If watching the field and running between the wickets interests you more, compare a position further round the boundary.

Shade provision does not mean every public seat sits beneath a roof. Choose a pagoda place where available and leave the access route open for other spectators. Sunscreen, a hat and a lightweight waterproof remain sensible items for our suggested match bag. Keep an eye on changing conditions between innings and ask a steward before moving into any area that is set aside for accessibility or match operations.

Getting there

By taxi or drop-off

Book a licensed taxi in advance if you need a car after play, agreeing a safe collection point with the driver. Check whether your preferred taxi app serves the area.

Middlesex names Moor Park on the Metropolitan line as the nearest station and gives a walk of about ten minutes. The published pedestrian shortcut passes beneath the railway, goes up steps and follows the path through the spinney towards Askew Road. From there it reaches the school entrance and Long Drive. That is useful for a mobile visitor travelling without much luggage; anyone who cannot use steps should ask for a suitable alternative rather than setting off along the shortcut.

The school’s own travel page also describes rail connections from Marylebone through Harrow-on-the-Hill or Rickmansworth, with an onward Metropolitan line journey to Moor Park. Check current services with the operator before committing to a connection. Our advice is to select a journey that leaves a margin for the walk through the campus and the ticket queue, especially if you want to see the first ball of a double-header.

Vehicle access is via Sandy Lodge Lane, with no access through Moor Park Estate according to the county venue page. Use HA6 2HT together with the school name and the event’s directions. The June 2026 match guide allowed parking purchases in advance or on arrival and required card payment. The next season’s parking fee, capacity and arrangements are TBC; a school’s ordinary visitor instructions should be read alongside the county’s match notice.

For a group arriving by several methods, we suggest meeting at the signed cricket entrance rather than the station or a general school reception. A charged phone and saved ticket make it easier to coordinate if train passengers and drivers arrive at different times. On departure, agree whether everyone is leaving together or staying until the final over before you separate to watch from different parts of the ground.

Getting home

The September 2026 Championship guide gives a finish at 17:30 or after 96 overs, whichever is later. Play can finish early or run late. Use Moor Park on the Metropolitan line towards central London, or north towards Watford, Amersham or Chesham. Book a licensed taxi in advance if you need a car after play, agreeing a safe collection point with the driver. Check your last train in the National Rail journey planner and allow time to leave the ground.

Tickets and festival days

Use the official Middlesex ticket shop for the relevant event. The 7 June 2026 programme paired Middlesex Women against Derbyshire with the men against Essex. Its visitor guide said Season Guest Passes were not valid. For September’s Lancashire Championship match, guest-pass arrangements differed. Even members should read the entry paragraph for their chosen day, because the same county and ground can have different rules across formats.

The 2026 guides offered junior and over-65 categories alongside adult admission. Details for 2027, including any double-header offer, are TBC. When comparing tickets, look at whether the purchase covers one day or the whole event, and whether a child needs a ticket even when a promotion reduces its price. If your group includes several ages, have those details ready before working through checkout.

Our recommendation for a first school-ground visit is to book the cricket you actually want to watch rather than treating a long programme as a requirement to stay all day. With a double-header, decide how much of each match suits your group; with the Championship, leave room for a proper lunch and a walk during the interval. Confirm any re-entry arrangement with the county if you intend to leave the ticketed area and return.

Your ticket on the day

The 2026 guide asks members to show membership cards; public tickets are sold online or at the gate. Follow the delivery instructions for your purchase. Contact Middlesex before travelling if you cannot access your ticket or need concession ID.

Children and age rules

Ask the county’s ticket team whether a child needs an accompanying adult for this festival. Confirm junior ID, hospitality age limits and the ID accepted at bars before booking. Taking the family

What you can take in

The Middlesex outground regulations prohibit spectators’ own alcohol for T20 and set a limited allowance for Championship and One-Day Cup fixtures. They also exclude pets other than assistance dogs and restrict smoking or vaping to designated places. Prepare for the entrance search described in the match instructions. Keep your ticket and essentials easy to reach, and avoid taking more equipment than you can manage without blocking other spectators.

The June double-header guide described a cashless venue, including concessions, parking and the shop. Carry an accepted payment card or a charged payment device if you intend to buy refreshments. The event information listed food outlets and free water refills. Catering and opening arrangements for the next match are TBC, so consult the fresh announcement if a particular food option matters to your party.

For Championship cricket, the September notice offered a bar marquee, coffee, hot and cold food and a weather-dependent ice-cream van. These give an idea of the event setup without fixing the vendors for a future summer. Our suggested packing choice is a small, manageable bag and a refillable bottle, with a spare layer for sitting still. Consult the current food policy before relying on a picnic or bringing a larger cool box.

Paying at the ground

Bring a card and some cash, as payment methods for this festival need confirmation. Ask the county about cash-machine provision before travelling.

Where to stay

Our accommodation search would begin with places that offer a straightforward route to Moor Park or a simple drive to Sandy Lodge Lane. Compare Northwood, Rickmansworth and other suitable stops against your whole journey rather than the room rate alone. If you plan to leave a car at your accommodation, check both the parking permission and how you will complete the trip to the cricket.

The school’s rail directions make a London stay another option, particularly if this is one part of a longer visit. Balance the convenience of evening plans in London against the extra travel on match day. For a multi-day Championship stay, inspect the route for each day you intend to attend and choose a booking with cancellation terms you understand. Start times and dates must come from the published fixture before you make non-refundable plans.

Evenings out

For an outdoor addition to a Northwood-area trip, Rickmansworth Aquadrome has visitor information from Three Rivers District Council. Our suggestion is to consider it on a free morning or separate day, then check the current access notices and available daylight. A visit that involves paths or lakes needs more planning than simply adding a name to an after-cricket itinerary.

For a wider stay, Visit Herts’ attraction finder lists options in the Three Rivers and Watford areas. Filter for the place you will actually be based and check each venue’s own opening times. That provides a practical way to choose a second activity without assuming that a school-ground match includes access to any separate attraction.

Fixtures

The county confirmed the Essex men’s T20 and Derbyshire women’s T20 double-header for 7 June 2026. It also issued spectator information for Lancashire in the Championship beginning on 2 September 2026. These are completed-season examples that establish the ground’s county use, with different formats and different arrival times.

Merchant Taylors’ School fixtures for 2027: TBC. Follow Middlesex’s fixture list and match notices for opponents, dates, ticket categories and any shuttle or parking updates. Match admission is organised through the county; the school’s own sporting calendar also contains school cricket and is not a substitute for the county ticket listing.

The June notice also listed an accessible toilet, baby changing and a quiet or multifaith marquee. Contact Middlesex before booking to confirm the event layout and any companion requirements, using the match visitor information as the starting point.

Take particular care with the station route: the advertised Moor Park shortcut includes stairs. Ask for a step-free approach or an appropriate drop-off route if that affects you. Give the club enough detail about the mobility aid or assistance needed to identify a workable entrance and seating route. The shortest route shown on a map may not be the easiest one for your visit.
