Scarborough North Marine Road: visitor guide

Updated 17 October 2026

North Marine Road combines Yorkshire county cricket with a proper seaside break. Choose your match first, then plan around the current seating arrangements: the Peasholm Park End was closed for the 2026 season, and its reopening date for 2027 is TBC.

The ground

The houses around North Marine Road give the ground its distinctive enclosed appearance, while the sea remains close enough to shape the rest of your holiday. Scarborough Cricket Club traces its beginnings to 1849, when cricket was played on Castle Hill. The club obtained the North Marine Road field in 1863; enlargement and levelling followed in the winter of 1871–72. Its official history explains how this developed into a venue for local, county and international cricket.

The pavilion dates from 1896, the North Stand from 1926 and the West Stand from 1956. Those different building periods help explain why this feels unlike a single modern stadium bowl. Look around between overs and you can follow the ground’s growth through its varied structures. The club dates the Scarborough Festival’s beginnings to an extended cricket programme in 1876, although today’s programme has changed substantially from the touring sides and invitation elevens of earlier festivals.

Our suggestion is to make Scarborough a two-night trip if you want both cricket and the coast. A full day at the ground can leave little time for another attraction before it closes. Staying over allows a seafront evening and a separate morning in town without requiring you to leave the cricket early. Yorkshire’s main stadium is covered in the Headingley guide; use the venue printed against your chosen fixture when arranging travel.

Stands and where to sit

There is no published seating plan here on which to base a reliable current sun-and-shade diagram. More importantly, Yorkshire’s 2026 facilities announcement closed the entire Peasholm Park End, from the scoreboard to the commentary boxes, following an inspection. The announcement said redevelopment plans were being prepared. For 2027, the reopening arrangements are TBC; an old photograph showing occupied seats there is not a reason to expect admission.

The June 2026 match guide also identified the North Stand and Family Stand as closed, with the West Stand open. Pavilion seats were restricted to specified county and Scarborough members, while balcony access was more restricted. Ask which areas your actual ticket includes before settling on a pavilion view. General admission and membership do not necessarily provide the same choices.

For an exposed seat, take a hat and a layer that can be added when the temperature falls. If shelter is essential, contact the ticket office about an open covered area before buying. On arrival, judge your view with both the wicket and sight screen in mind, and keep aisles clear when moving. A small adjustment sideways can matter more than being closer to the boundary if a screen obstructs the line towards the bowler.

Getting there

By taxi or drop-off

Taxis wait on the frontage of Scarborough station. Agree a licensed-car collection point for after the cricket before travelling. Check whether your preferred taxi app serves the area.

TransPennine Express advertises direct trains between York and Scarborough. York is therefore a useful interchange for a rail-based cricket break. Search the timetable for the match date rather than relying on a general journey duration, and check the return service as carefully as the outward train. If you are joining a long-distance train at York after play, leave enough room for the walk or taxi back to Scarborough station and a realistic connection.

The ground’s directions page gives North Marine Road and postcode YO12 7TJ. It warns that surrounding streets have disc or residents’ parking restrictions, including short maximum stays. A space that works for a café visit may be unsuitable for a full cricket day. Read the signs on the specific street; do not plan to remain there through several sessions simply because other cars are parked nearby.

The club’s older travel page contains a cricket shuttle timetable explicitly dated 2024. The 2026 county match guide confirmed park-and-ride operation, but 2027 shuttle dates, stops and last departures are TBC. Use the current East Yorkshire timetable before relying on a connection. A late finish can make the final bus more important than its daytime frequency, particularly if your car is outside the town centre.

Getting home

Check your match guide for the expected finish. Play can finish early or run late. Use Scarborough station for York, with connections towards Leeds and other mainline destinations. Taxis wait on the frontage of Scarborough station. Agree a licensed-car collection point for after the cricket before travelling. Check your last train in the National Rail journey planner and allow time to leave the ground.

Tickets and festival days

Yorkshire’s Scarborough ticket announcement directed buyers to the county’s online system or ticket office, rather than buying Yorkshire match tickets directly from Scarborough Cricket Club. It offered an advance-purchase rate in 2026, with separate adult, concession and junior categories. The 2027 prices and purchase deadlines are TBC. Compare the actual match product and its date before paying, especially when a four-day game is listed with separate daily tickets.

For the June 2026 Championship match, on-the-day sales were handled at the North Marine Road entrance, while members scanned their cards. Those instructions help explain why you should not turn up at any open gate expecting every ticket service to be available there. The 2027 gate-opening times and arrangements will be published with the relevant match information.

For a family visit, choose the length of day you want before the ticket category. A Championship day allows you to follow the match across separate sessions; a one-day match has its own beginning and conclusion scheduled on the same date. Do not promise children that a stand called the Family Stand will be available: its 2026 closure makes the current facilities notice particularly important.

Your ticket on the day

Members scan their membership cards, and public tickets are sold through Yorkshire. On-the-day ticket sales are at the North Marine Road entrance only. Follow your booking’s presentation instructions and ask the ticket team before travelling if you cannot access your ticket or need concession ID.

Children and age rules

North Marine Road’s safeguarding regulations say children under 14 should attend with a responsible adult aged 18 or over. Ask Yorkshire about junior ID, hospitality age limits and the ID accepted at bars. Taking the family

What you can take in

The North Marine Road regulations prohibit glass bottles, glass drinking vessels and metal drinking vessels. They allow a limited alcohol allowance for adults at designated fixtures: up to four unopened 330ml cans of beer or cider, or an unopened plastic bottle or carton containing no more than 750ml of wine. Spirits and alcohol brought in after re-entry are prohibited. Check that your fixture is designated before packing alcohol.

Yorkshire’s Scarborough weather advice encourages spectators to bring an umbrella, sunscreen and bottled water. Position an umbrella so it does not block another person’s view, and put it away when directed by stewards. Pack medication and any essential dietary items accessibly for the entrance search. Specific 2027 picnic and bag arrangements are TBC; ask the club about an unusual container or larger piece of equipment before travelling.

Paying at the ground

The 2026 guide allows cash or card for on-the-day tickets. Check how the bars and food outlets take payment and whether a cash machine is available before you travel.

Where to stay

For a cricket-focused stay, compare accommodation around North Marine Road and North Bay with town-centre options closer to the station. Visit North Yorkshire’s North Bay guide places Peasholm Park, the North Bay Railway and other attractions in this part of the resort. A nearby room can make it easier to drop off extra clothing before an evening walk, while a station-side base can simplify arrival with luggage.

Our booking advice is to compare the whole stay, including parking, breakfast and cancellation terms. Ask the property about the route from the street to your room if stairs or gradients matter. For a multi-day Championship trip, a flexible reservation can be useful because the match may finish before its scheduled final day. Waiting for the confirmed 2027 fixture date avoids anchoring your holiday to last season’s calendar.

Evenings out

The North Bay promenade gives you a straightforward seaside option after sitting through the cricket. The official visitor guide describes the route around the castle headland towards South Bay along Royal Albert Drive. Choose the length of walk around your energy and the weather, and leave enough daylight if you also want time to stop rather than simply get from one bay to the other.

Peasholm Park offers a different pace, with gardens and a lake setting near North Bay. For an indoor evening, the Stephen Joseph Theatre is opposite the railway station on Westborough. Check the performance start before booking alongside a cricket ticket: a lengthy final session and a meal may not fit comfortably before the curtain. The theatre’s own accessibility information is the appropriate place to arrange any assistance.

Fixtures

Yorkshire’s 2026 ticket announcement lists men’s One Day Cup matches at Scarborough against Hampshire on 21 July and Derbyshire on 7 August. These are historical dates. The county’s Championship programme also included Warwickshire from 12 June and Leicestershire in August, reinforcing that North Marine Road hosted more than one type of county visit.

Fixtures and festival dates for 2027 are TBC. When the list is released, check the ground alongside the opponent: Yorkshire also use Headingley and York. If you are following the county between venues, allow for a change of base rather than assuming every home match involves returning to Leeds. Keep the match confirmation with your travel booking so the day, competition and venue remain together.

Accessibility

The 2026 Yorkshire guide said there was no pre-paid spectator parking, including Blue Badge spaces. Contact the county before making an accessible travel plan for 2027, particularly if you need a drop-off close to an entrance, step-free seating or a nearby accessible toilet. Ask about the complete route from arrival to seat; a reopened gate does not necessarily mean every part of a stand is available.

The club’s ground regulations permit assistance dogs and encourage advance contact to help with seating and welfare arrangements. Tell staff what you need when booking. If travelling by rail, arrange station assistance through the operator separately from any assistance inside the ground. Keep the county’s reply available on the day so gate staff can direct you to the agreed entrance.
