Clifton Park, York: visitor guide
Updated 17 October 2026
Clifton Park puts Yorkshire county cricket within reach of a York city break. The ground is on Shipton Road, outside the historic centre, so combine your train to York with an onward bus, taxi or planned walk rather than expecting the boundary beside the station.

Outground at a glance
The ground
Clifton Park is the home of York Cricket Club and an outground for Yorkshire’s county teams. York offers a different scale of day from Headingley: the attraction is a county match at a club ground, with the city available for the rest of the trip. Keep the two grounds separate when comparing tickets and hospitality.
The host club’s 2026 hospitality announcement confirms Yorkshire against Worcestershire at Clifton Park on 29 July. It offered pitch-side seating alongside a meal package. That is useful when deciding what sort of visit you want: a day around the boundary and a hosted table are separate products, even though everyone watches the same cricket.
Our suggestion is to give York two distinct parts: cricket during the match and the city either that evening or the following morning. Trying to fit a major attraction into the lunch interval adds an unnecessary journey. If the match is your main reason for travelling, keep the sightseeing flexible so a close finish does not become a conflict with a timed ticket elsewhere.

Stands and where to sit
There is no published seating plan in the current York visitor information used here. Seating changes with the fixture. The May 2026 women’s match guide said no stands would operate, with general seating around the ground and personal chairs welcome. By contrast, a 2025 men’s T20 guide described a temporary stand at the Rugby Stand end. Use the guide for the actual event to choose your ticket and what to carry.
At an unreserved match, look at the view before settling for the day. A position closer to the line of the wicket helps you follow the bowler’s direction; a side-on view shows the batter’s movement and running. Stay outside marked boundaries, keep access routes open and listen to stewards when a seating area fills. A spare chair should not be used to hold a place for someone who has not arrived.
Yorkshire describes York as an open-air venue. Plan for sunshine and rain wherever you sit, with enough clothing for a breeze late in the innings. A nearby pavilion or hospitality tent is not a promise of shelter included with general admission. Anyone who needs a covered place for health or comfort should discuss the requirement with Yorkshire before paying for travel.

Getting there
By taxi or drop-off
The station taxi rank is on Station Road. Agree a licensed-car collection point for after the cricket before travelling. Check whether your preferred taxi app serves the area.

Arrive by rail at York station, then plan the final leg to Clifton Park. National Rail lists bus and taxi connections, lifts, step-free platform access and assistance facilities. Download the station map if you need to agree a meeting point: it is easier to coordinate a group with a named exit than with “outside the station”.
Yorkshire’s 2026 York visitor page points to park-and-ride buses serving the Clifton Park stops and services along Shipton Road. It names the Rawcliffe Bar park-and-ride option and routes 29, 30 and 31x. Check the current timetable and direction of travel with iTravel York before departure; the first convenient bus into the centre may not be the service needed for the ground.
For drivers, the Rawcliffe Bar information is worth comparing with any match parking offered by Yorkshire. Check the last return service as carefully as the outward one. If taking a chair and picnic on the bus, keep the load manageable and leave room for other passengers.
Book parking using the match’s own arrangements. The county’s 2026 page offers advance parking, while the women’s Hampshire guide offered free parking at the Rugby Stand end. Those are different arrangements for different events. Do not choose a nearby residential street as a fallback without checking restrictions. For a taxi return, agree a pickup point clear of departing traffic and leave enough time before a booked train.
Getting home
Check your match guide for the expected finish. Play can finish early or run late. Use York for London King’s Cross, Leeds and northern connections. The station taxi rank is on Station Road. Agree a licensed-car collection point for after the cricket before travelling. Check your last train in the National Rail journey planner and allow time to leave the ground.
Tickets and festival days
Use Yorkshire’s ticket shop for county admission. The general 2026 visitor page asks visitors to buy online in advance and allows eligible members to use their cards. Check the membership category and competition: the May women’s guide specifically excluded Championship-only memberships from that match’s included admission.
A smaller outground does not necessarily mean a ticket will remain available at the gate. The published guide for Yorkshire against Durham in the 2025 T20 season described a sold-out fixture with no admission for visitors who had not pre-booked. For a future York match, secure admission before choosing a non-refundable hotel or rail fare.
If you want hospitality, start with the host club and county’s official offers. The 2026 Worcestershire package included admission, food, pitch-side seating and parking if required. Ask about table size, dietary requirements and the view before comparing it with standard admission. The 2027 York programme, family offers and hospitality prices are TBC; a previous package should not be treated as a current offer.
Your ticket on the day
Tickets are sold online or at the gate, while members scan their membership cards. Follow your public ticket’s delivery instructions. Contact Yorkshire before travelling if you cannot access your ticket or need to confirm concession ID.
Children and age rules
Ask the county’s ticket team whether a child needs an accompanying adult for this festival. Confirm junior ID, hospitality age limits and the ID accepted at bars before booking. Taking the family
Buy tickets from the county’s official ticket office or the resale platform named by that seller. Use the official resale route and read Action Fraud’s ticket fraud advice.

What you can take in
Yorkshire says its York ground rules follow the club’s main regulations, and lists the venue as cashless. It excludes dogs apart from guide dogs and hearing dogs. For re-entry, its visitor information requires a valid match ticket with a pass-out slip. Ask for the slip before leaving, particularly if you plan to retrieve something from your vehicle.
The women’s Hampshire match guide encouraged visitors to take bottled water, suncream and an umbrella, and permitted their own chairs. Pack a waterproof bag for small items and a layer you can put on without emptying your picnic onto the ground. Keep umbrellas from blocking other spectators’ views and follow instructions if wind makes one difficult to control.
Food, drink and alcohol permissions for the next fixture are TBC. Read the event guide and Yorkshire’s matchday regulations before filling a cooler. In particular, do not infer an alcohol allowance from the informal setting: the 2025 T20 instructions prohibited bringing it in. If carrying medication or a necessary dietary item, ask the county what arrangements will apply to your visit.
Paying at the ground
The 2026 guide confirms card payments, but does not say that every outlet refuses cash. Bring a card and some cash, and ask about a cash machine if you need one.
Where to stay
Our choice for a cricket-and-city weekend would be a base that makes both the Shipton Road journey and the evening straightforward. A central hotel can suit travellers arriving by train, while a room nearer Clifton may reduce the matchday walk. Compare actual routes rather than the hotel’s general description of being in York. Ask where you can leave luggage if check-in is after the match starts.
The official Visit York accommodation directory separates hotels, guesthouses and self-catering options. For two nearby fixture dates, compare a longer stay with returning home between games. Check cancellation terms, breakfast service, any parking charge and whether the room has the beds your group needs. A low headline room rate is less useful if it adds two complicated journeys each day.
If you are combining York with Scarborough cricket, confirm both fixture venues before arranging the accommodation. Treat the transfer as a separate travel day unless the timetable comfortably supports your plans. It can be more enjoyable to give each ground its own unhurried visit than to turn an outground holiday into a series of last-minute connections.

Evenings out
York’s official tourism site has a dedicated evenings guide with restaurants, theatre, guided walks and other activities. Our suggestion after a full day outside is an uncomplicated meal near your accommodation. Save a timed tour or performance for an evening when you are comfortable leaving cricket before the final ball if necessary.
For a longer stay, use Visit York to choose a museum, the Minster or another attraction on a separate morning. Check each operator’s opening times and ticket conditions. A rainy forecast can make an indoor option appealing, but keep its booking flexible until you know whether play will take place. A weather interruption does not automatically leave enough time for a trip across the city.
Fixtures
Yorkshire’s 2026 county ticket announcement named One Day Cup matches at York against Worcestershire on 29 July and Durham on 31 July. These are past-season dates. The next confirmed county programme at Clifton Park is TBC for 2027.
When dates are released, check the women’s schedule as well as the men’s. York also hosted the women’s Hampshire fixture covered in the county’s May 2026 guide. Before booking, open the full match entry rather than relying on an opponent list, because Yorkshire’s home fixtures can be shared between Headingley, Scarborough and York.
