cinch County Ground: visitor guide

Updated October 2026 · Prices and rules checked against Northamptonshire’s own pages · How we check

The cinch County Ground is Northamptonshire’s home in Abington, still known to cricket followers as Wantage Road or the County Ground, Northampton. Come for Championship cricket, a One-Day Cup afternoon or a Steelbacks Blast evening. Compact stands, a pavilion and the county’s accessible viewing areas give visitors several ways to settle into the day, with Northampton town centre a bus or taxi journey away. The ground

Wantage Road offers a county day at close quarters. The ground is in Abington, with named seating around the boundary and the Spencer Pavilion giving the southern side its familiar shape. Northamptonshire’s official naming announcement calls the venue the cinch County Ground. Keep Abington Avenue and NN1 4PR on your travel plan: the club uses Wantage Road and Abington Avenue approaches, and the entrance you need depends on the match and your ticket.

The county’s formats bring different rhythms. A Championship day leaves time to move between sessions, try the café and restaurant choices and watch from a different angle where your ticket allows. Blast is a busier evening, with Steelbacks branding, bars and a premium reserved-seating option. One-Day Cup matches have included family and community days; use the current match notice for their activities rather than expecting every fixture to have the same programme.

Northampton has two roofed spectator stands, Cinch and Turner, alongside open family and northern seating. There are wheelchair viewing areas beside the Pavilion and in several boundary stands, plus a Changing Places facility in the Lynn Wilson Centre. An elevated seat and an accessible front-row space are different choices. The club-linked AccessAble surveys are useful when picking a route, while a season ticket may bring a Pavilion seat or a private room that ordinary admission does not include.

The April 2026 Championship guide opens the Hevey Restaurant on days one to three, with viewing from the Hevey decking from the start of play. It also identifies the Mushtaq Bar and a coffee and ice-cream concession near the groundsman’s hut.

Stands and where to sit

Start with shelter, access and the type of ticket you want. Cinch and Turner are covered; B&F Family, Lynn Wilson, Metcalf and Jackson Grundy and Blast+ seating are uncovered in the club-linked surveys. The Spencer Pavilion has its own season-ticket and room routes. The family stand’s name alone does not establish an alcohol-free block: ask the ticket team for the designated Alcohol Free Zone if that matters to your group.

The northern stands give open boundary seating, while the western Cinch and Blast+ areas offer contrasting roof and package choices on the same side. The Pavilion and Turner sit around the southern boundary. Premium rooms and terraces have different facilities from an ordinary stand seat.

For a sunny summer day, east-facing western seating is generally shaded by its own roof after lunch, while the open northern seating can catch the afternoon sun. Seats on bends get a mix as the sun moves; uncovered rows do not become roof-shaded simply because the sun is behind the stand. The plan and stand cards give a broad guide, with front rows more exposed. Use the club’s current row information if shelter is essential.

The individual wicket runs roughly north–south between the Lynn Wilson Centre End and David Capel End. The wider multi-strip square runs across it. Lynn Wilson and Turner seating give end-on views, while the western Cinch and Blast+ banks are side-on; the corner sections provide angled perspectives.

North-up Northampton plan: individual wicket roughly north–south, slightly NNW–SSE; the wider square is east–west. Lynn Wilson Centre End north, David Capel End south. Getting there

By taxi or drop-off

Northamptonshire’s contact information lists a taxi rank at Northampton station. Agree a licensed-car collection point for after the cricket before travelling. Check whether your preferred taxi app serves the area.

Sources: Northamptonshire: contact and travel information · West Northamptonshire Council: using taxis

Northampton station is the rail gateway. The club’s contact page gives a walk of about thirty to forty minutes and describes taxis at the station. Use that as its published walking guide, then check the actual route and your pace. The April Championship PDF gives a different station distance; ask the club about a route if walking time is critical. The cricket ground is in Abington, not at Northampton Town’s football venue.

For buses, the club names services 1 and 16 towards Weston Favell and The Abington pub stop near the Wantage Road entrance. Check Stagecoach’s current service 1 for your departure, stop and evening return. The station and bus station are separate parts of the journey, so leave time for the transfer rather than treating a bus departure as a train connection.

The April 2026 Championship guide priced ground parking at £5 without a pass, on a first-come basis. Parking changes by format; the season-ticket information excludes ordinary ground parking for Blast. A parking price does not reserve a bay.

Blue Badge bays are available at the Wantage Road and Abington Avenue car parks, subject to availability. The current terms say parking cannot be reserved in advance. Tell the club about an accessible arrival or drop-off before travelling. For a late Blast or international finish, check the actual last train and bus; 2027 match-date final services and a regular club shuttle are TBC.

Buy through Northamptonshire’s official ticket page, which links to the club’s Ticketco sales. County admission, season tickets, Blast+ and hospitality are separate products. Individual 2027 county tariffs and their release dates are TBC. The published 2026 offers below are a guide to the previous season, with the dated Championship notice confirming both online and gate sales.

England women face Bangladesh on 8 September 2027. The club’s ballot closed on 29 September 2026; current booking information includes ballot-winner and early-bird offers. The published ballot general-admission tariff is £15 for adults and £5 for juniors, with IT20+ at £21 and £11. IT20+ includes an allocated reserved seat and exclusive bar and toilet facilities. Check eligibility and current availability on the official listing.

The club page and ticket listing give different start times for that international, so its daily start is TBC here. A confirmed general-sale date and an official resale route are also TBC. County cricket at Northampton

The April 2026 Championship guide priced adults at £15 and juniors at £5, with tickets available online and at the gate. Gates opened at 10:00 for an 11:00 start. The guide allowed extra time for the day’s over requirement, so the stated 18:00 finish was subject to play. Individual 2027 county tariffs are TBC; use the dated guide as a past-season price reference.

Steelbacks Blast tickets were advertised from £27 for adults in 2026, with prices rising on match day. The published 2026 T20 season ticket cost £99 and included men’s and Tier 2 women’s home Blast fixtures, Spencer Pavilion seating and priority for finals tickets. Check each product’s exclusions and the actual match’s category. Individual One-Day Cup prices and 2027 release dates are TBC.

The 2026 all-format Gold season ticket was £265 and Platinum £370, covering Championship, men’s and Tier 2 women’s Blast and One-Day Cup home fixtures. Platinum added the Spencer Lounge. Championship-only Bronze was £175 and Silver £240, with Silver also providing the Lounge. The published junior season ticket was £49; its age-cutoff wording needs confirmation with the club before buying.

The Championship guide opens the Long Room for members. Spencer Pavilion seating is also explicitly available through the public T20 season-ticket route, while Spencer Lounge admission depends on the stated membership tier. A general ground ticket, Pavilion seat and private-room package give different entitlements. Ask about a guest’s room access separately from their match admission.

The ground regulations allow dogs kept on a lead and under close control, provided they cause no nuisance and stay off the pitch. Check the fixture’s additional conditions before bringing one. Northamptonshire’s 2027 county fixture dates and any outground allocation are TBC; choose the venue as well as the opposition when planning a visit.

What you can take in

Last checked: October 2026

The ground regulations prohibit outside alcohol at T20 matches and allow the club to impose that restriction at other events. For other admission they define excessive alcohol as more than four cans of normal-strength beer, lager or cider, or one bottle of wine. They also prohibit bringing alcohol back on re-entry and taking or drinking it in the designated Alcohol Free Zone.

The contact FAQ gives a stricter instruction: food and non-alcoholic drinks only, with no glass or cans. Confirm your match’s rule with Northamptonshire before packing county-day alcohol; the two official instructions conflict. The regulations prohibit outside takeaway food. A home picnic is different from a takeaway purchase, but ask about any unusual container rather than assuming permission.

Numerical bag dimensions and a separate cool-box allowance are TBC. Searches apply, and the regulations allow officials to remove items that create danger, offence or distress. Flags and signs are controlled, must not interfere with others and must not be attached to structures. Offensive clothing and bare torsos are prohibited; a general fancy-dress permission is TBC. Dogs must be on a lead, controlled, unobtrusive and kept off the pitch.

Paying at the ground

Northamptonshire’s cricket and concert events have been cashless since 2021. Bring a payment card and ask the club about cash-machine provision if you need it.

Where to stay

Last checked: October 2026

Central Northampton works well if you want the station, town bars or an evening at Royal & Derngate alongside cricket. Abington keeps you nearer the ground’s neighbourhood; Bedford Road is another hotel area for a separately planned transfer. Compare your arrival, match journey and return before choosing a room, especially for an evening fixture. Verified hotel-to-ground travel times are TBC.

Mercure Northampton is on Silver Street in the town centre. The hotel describes a ten-minute walk to the station, which makes it a useful rail-based option; that is a hotel-to-station figure, not a cricket-ground walk. Holiday Inn Northampton is on Bedford Road and describes a drive of under ten minutes to central Northampton. Neither hotel’s parking should be treated as a match parking reservation.

Named hotel buttons lead to their Booking.com property pages through CJ. Room prices and availability change with the dates; leave time for a separate bus or taxi journey to Wantage Road if your chosen property is outside Abington.

Before and after the cricket

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery is the place to explore the town’s shoemaking story as well as its art collections. Nearby, 78 Derngate offers a more focused architectural visit to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh house; check its visitor arrangements and any tour booking before committing your free morning. Delapré Abbey gives you a third option for a longer break from the boundary, with the historic house and grounds making a better rest-day choice than a hurried lunch outing.

The Old Bank is a town-centre pub serving food, with the current menu and opening information on Greene King’s official page. Consider it after play only after checking when the kitchen finishes, and leave the booking flexible enough for delayed cricket. For a multi-day stay, combine the museum and 78 Derngate on one non-playing day, or choose Delapré for a less compressed outing. Discover Northamptonshire covers the wider area, while Discover Northampton’s town-centre listings are useful for current events and further food options. Their live information is a better guide to what will actually be open than assuming every attraction runs daily.
