Ambassador Cruise Line Ground: visitor guide

Updated October 2026 · Prices and rules checked against Essex’s own pages · How we check

The Ambassador Cruise Line Ground is Essex’s home in Chelmsford, traditionally the County Ground, Chelmsford. Cricket sits close to the city centre and River Can, with a ten-minute station walk and a compact boundary circuit. Championship days offer time to move between views; Blast brings allocated seats and a busy evening departure. Pick the match, admission category and family block together before deciding where to sit. Last checked: October 2026.

The ground

Chelmsford is a cricket ground woven into the city rather than an isolated stadium trip. The River Can runs beside the approach, Central Park provides the station-side route and New Writtle Street brings you to the main entrance. Once inside, the different seating banks sit close around the cricket. A walk at an interval lets you compare the end-on perspective with the boundary angle without planning a second journey across town.

The Doug Insole Pavilion anchors the traditional member side, with Tom Pearce’s lower and upper seating nearby. The current map also names the River Stand and the curved public sections around the opposite boundary. Essex added a Woodland Group seating section in April 2025, announcing more than three hundred places.

For Championship cricket, settle into a spell, follow the field changes and leave room for a city-centre break after play. Blast is a different day out: choose the allocated seat and current alcohol-free block before bringing a family, and plan the last connection before the final over. The Pavilion upgrade and the premium dining products also make different visits; buy the access you want rather than assuming every room comes with an ordinary seat.

Facilities

  • The 2025 spectator guide locates accessible toilets and baby changing near family Blocks 29–31.
  • Water stations are at the bar areas in that published guide.

Stands and where to sit

Tom Pearce has lower and upper tiers on the northern side. Doug Insole Pavilion combines indoor facilities with outdoor member viewing. The current 2026 Championship guide allows non-members to buy an upgrade for these areas. That published public route means they should not be treated as permanently closed to visitors; the offer for another format must still be selected from that match’s ticket categories.

The May 2026 map places Achilleus Security River Stand in blocks 10–12, Greene King in 13–16, Moulsham in 18–21, Felsted School in 22–24, Tiptree in 25 and Toomey Motor Group in 26. Kenton occupies 27–31 and Woodland 32. These current ranges replace older guides. Seating installations and the sections opened can change with the fixture; the club has not supplied a complete permanent-versus-seasonal building classification in the sources checked.

The wicket runs approximately south-west to north-east. Eastern-facing boundary seats receive more afternoon sun; the western side catches morning light, with shelter depending on the actual roof. Felsted is described by Essex as covered. Exact coverage for some smaller sections is TBC; do not buy a seat on the assumption that a stand name alone guarantees cover.

The current map identifies Kenton blocks 27–29 as alcohol-free and 30–31 as family seating, with wheelchair positions in 30–31. Earlier visitor guides and terms use different block numbers. Choose the named family or alcohol-free category on your actual booking rather than carrying an old number into a new fixture. Family seating and alcohol-free seating are separate labels.

Getting there

By taxi or drop-off

Book a licensed taxi in advance if you need a car after play, agreeing a safe collection point with the driver. Check whether your preferred taxi app serves the area.

Essex gives a ten-minute walk from Chelmsford station. The 1876 Gate approach runs through Central Park via Century Tower and serves visitors arriving from the station and Meteor Way. The main entrance is on New Writtle Street, while River Gate faces the city-centre side. Follow the gate on your match information rather than assuming every entrance opens for every fixture.

Greater Anglia connects Chelmsford with London Liverpool Street and currently advertises up to five trains an hour on weekdays. A frequency statement is not a published 2027 final service.

The bus station is beside the railway station on Duke Street. Use First Bus’s current routes for your starting point and the return after play. Club guides have named different services for different fixtures, so the operator’s date-specific journey planner is the useful final check. The park-and-ride arrival at Duke Street still leaves the ground approach to complete.

Sandon Park & Ride is by the A12/A414 and currently runs Monday to Saturday, not Sundays or bank holidays. First Bus gives eleven minutes to Duke Street. Its ordinary closing time is 19:30, with specified later return arrangements on other routes; check the stops and date before using it for an evening match. Overnight parking is not allowed.

Chelmer Valley Park & Ride currently operates on weekdays only, with a fifteen-minute journey to Duke Street. It is not a weekend-match option. General spectator parking at the ground is unavailable. Meteor Way is a member arrangement: the 2026 guide lists £3 pre-booked or £4 on the day, first come, and closure thirty minutes after play. High Chelmer is a public city-centre alternative; check its own tariff and closing time.

Tickets: when they go on sale and what they cost

Last checked: October 2026

Use Essex’s official ticket account and choose the format, date and seating entitlement together. Championship admission can be unallocated, while major matches and Blast use their own categories. An ordinary ticket, a member-area upgrade and a hospitality package are different purchases. Check the price and seat shown before payment.

County cricket at Chelmsford

Essex’s 2026 Championship guide priced adults at £18 in advance, available until one hour before play, or £24 at the gate. Young adults and students were £12, and juniors £10. Ordinary seating was unallocated and excluded the Pavilion and Tom Pearce member areas. A public £9 upgrade opened the Pavilion and all member seating; a Premier Suite upgrade cost £20 extra. Individual 2027 tariffs are TBC.

For a clearly dated 2025 guide, men’s Blast double-header tickets started at £26 for adults and £10 for juniors; standalone women’s Blast started at £8 and £5. Individual 2026 and 2027 men’s Blast prices are TBC in the sources checked. The 2026 women’s One-Day Cup guide listed £10 admission online or at the gate, with only selected seating open. Do not apply that tariff to a men’s One-Day Cup match.

The published 2027 adult membership for ages 26–64 costs £230 for renewals, £250 early bird or £275 full price. Senior rates are £180, £200 and £225; ages 18–25 pay £75, £80 and £100. Renewals run until 31 October 2026, new sales open 1 November, early bird ends 31 January 2027 and full prices start 1 February. Membership covers home Championship, men’s and women’s One-Day Cup and women’s Blast; men’s Blast and internationals have separate discounted ticket routes.

Junior membership for ages four to seventeen is £10 for 2027; baby membership for ages zero to three is free. The 2026 Championship guide also offered a free Junior Membership Upgrade to junior ticket buyers, covering eligible home Championship and One-Day Cup games. Premier membership is an extra purchase, with published 2027 upgrades of £315, £330 or £340 according to the sale window. Match tickets, member-area admission and catered hospitality are distinct entitlements.

The regulations exclude pet dogs on match days; the club’s visitor guides welcome assistance dogs. The published 2026 first-team home schedule uses Chelmsford. A 2027 outground programme is TBC, so check Essex’s fixture venue before assuming a festival elsewhere in the county. A valid match ticket is still needed for eligible guests using a member’s access route.

What you can take in

Last checked: October 2026

Essex’s ground terms prohibit glass bottles and drinking vessels, metal cutlery and breakable kitchenware. Bags are searched; published numerical bag dimensions and cool-box permission are TBC. The 2025 Blast visitor guide allowed food and non-alcoholic drinks, but check the current fixture guide before packing a large picnic or unusual container.

No outside alcohol is allowed for T20 or televised matches. The 2026 Championship guide permits either 750ml of wine or champagne, or four 500ml cans of beer or cider. The current One-Day Cup guide gives either 750ml wine decanted into plastic, four beer/lager/cider containers up to 500ml, or two premixed aperitif/spirit cans up to 330ml per person. Glass remains prohibited; these allowances are alternatives.

Use the actual format’s visitor guide where its allowance differs from the general terms, and do not bring extra alcohol on re-entry. Small umbrellas are permitted, while metal-spiked umbrellas are not. Specific flags and fancy-dress permissions are TBC; ask Essex about props before arrival. Children aged twelve and under need an accompanying adult. Under-eighteen-months admission is free but still requires a ticket.

Paying at the ground

Gates and food-and-drink outlets are cashless. The Essex Cricket Store accepts cash for scorecards. Ask Essex about cash-machine provision if you need it.

Where to stay

Last checked: October 2026

Central Chelmsford keeps the station, city-centre evening and ground approach in the same visit. County Hotel is on Rainsford Road, a central base with its own arrival and parking arrangements. Its exact door-to-ground walk is TBC; compare the address with the gate on your ticket before choosing a room.

Little Waltham and northern Chelmsford provide an alternative outside the centre. Channels Hotel is on Pratts Farm Lane East; plan a separate ground transfer rather than treating it as a stadium-side walk. Its exact match-day travel time is TBC. A city room can simplify a late rail return, while an out-of-centre room suits visitors who already have a workable transport plan.

Before and after the cricket

Chelmsford Cathedral is a manageable city-centre stop before heading to the ground, although services and special events can restrict visitor access. The Museum of Chelmsford at Oaklands House is better kept for a separate morning: its displays follow the city’s history, so it provides some context beyond the cricket. Hylands Estate is the choice for a longer rest-day outing, with parkland, gardens and the Stables. Check the estate’s published open days before assuming that the house itself will be open.

For an evening meal, Côte Chelmsford is a brasserie near the Cathedral; its own page has the current menus, booking and service information. Leave room between close of play and a reservation so a late wicket or rain delay does not turn dinner into a rush. Chelmsford For You is the city’s visitor starting point for current events, eating and further attractions. On a multi-day match trip, use the museum or Hylands as a proper rest-day plan rather than trying to fit either into lunch. Keep the riverside return from the ground separate from any assumptions about an officially recommended route after dark.
